A league football match between local team Cadbury Athletic and Aston FC was abandoned on Saturday after one of the Aston FC players headbutted the referee.
The incident happened in the 71st minute when Cadbury had won a penalty in the Midland Football Combination League Division One game.
After the penalty was taken an Aston player butted the referee.
Speaking to the Birmingham Mail Cadbury match-day secretary Russell Cooke said: “I have never seen anything like that before and the incident took the edge off receiving the trophy a little bit.
“Up until then, it had not been a bad-tempered game. Then the penalty was given, which I though was a bit harsh, there were a few verbals, then it happened.”
Cadbury had already secured the division title and paraded the trophy after the game.
Cadbury’s season will end on Wednesday 7th May when they compete against Whitnash for the Birmingham Saturday Vase trophy
Its dissapointing that despite numerous requests this year to publish the success of the football club with match reports etc that have been ignored that when an incident like this occurs Bournville News are on it like a tramp on chips.
You’re right, we should cover sport in a constructive way on a more regular basis but there’s no denying that this was a newsworthy incident and this is a news site. For the record, I can only find a request from last year which admittedly I didn’t react to. Happy to publish regular reports next season.
