Grand aspire-ations for Bournville hockey team

Bournville Ladies Hockey Club is hoping to reach the top of the league this season after Birmingham education recruitment consultancy Aspire People pledged £1,000 in sponsorship.

The club, which is home to Bournville Ladies’ first and second teams, has used some of the money to invest in new home and away kits for both teams and will spend the rest upgrading its on-site training facilities.

The first team is currently in division two of the Midlands Region Hockey Women’s League after beating Burton Ladies last weekend, while the second team are battling it out in division two of the Worcestershire League.

Founded in 1902, the club practices at the grounds of King Edward’s School on Edgbaston Park Road every Wednesday.

Michaela Powell, managing director at Aspire People, said: “As a company we are committed to backing local talent and I feel especially passionate about women in sport, as they often don’t get the credit and support they deserve.

“A few of my colleagues play for the side, which is why we decided to sponsor them this year. It makes for a great day out when the office pitches up to show some support!”
